Cwmdonkin Park, Uplands

50days: #2 Cwmdonkin Park

Not all adventures are big adventures. Even teeny tiny adventures count. Like this one in Cwmdonkin Park.

It doesn’t get much more exciting than your first ever ride on a death slide.

A pretty big adventure in a small person’s world.

For the rest of us, Cwmdonkin has loads more to offer: tucked away in the trendy Uplands district of Swansea, this was one of Dylan Thomas’ favourite haunts – and inspirations. You’ll find nods to the man himself among the daffodils including a memorial stone with the words from ‘Fern Hill’.

Active folk will get their fix here too: with four tennis courts, a bowling green, a lovely children’s play area (with aforementioned slide of death) plus a long, wibbly-wobbly slide, there is plenty to keep everyone busy.

The perfect spot for a picnic, Cwmdonkin has gentle walking trails among the woodland and water gardens, with picnic benches dotted about. There are tea rooms and a bandstand with occasional events – the summer months invite lazy evenings stretched out on your blanket with a good book and perhaps a tipple in your hand – Dylan would definitely approve.
